GEDCOMs and Ysearch

GEDCOMS

GEDCOMs are the name of the file type used as the common, basic structure in all family history software.

Genealogical DNA studies rely on participants sharing their family trees and we ask that all Clan Cameron DNA Project participants upload a GEDCOM file with at least the direct male line of descent to the FTDNA Project page.

Here are directions for doing this using FamilyTreemaker software. Other software programs probably have similar “buttons” and procedures for extracting a streamlined GEDCOM to post.

Step 1:

Go to File, Export, Selected Individuals and then choose the person who is contributing the DNA or their father/ grandfather. Select “ancestors.” You should see a list of all the ancestors. Hit OK. In the next screen choose “GEDCOM” x.x standard as the file output type, privatize all living people, and select the biographical details you wish to share.

Step 2:

Once you have a GEDCOM file, you can edit it down further by opening the new file in your software, deleting people you do not want to have in the post, and re-exporting it into a GEDCOM format.

Step 3:

Log in to your FTDNA account and on the left hand menu scroll down to GEDCOM.. and click. The next screen will allow you to upload your GEDCOM to FTDNA. When you do this, others who match your DNA pattern and the Project Administrators will be able to see your family tree.

If you need help, contact the Project Administrator.

Ysearch

Ysearch is a means to share your test information and family tree more widely than FTDNA or the FTDNA Clan Project permits. People who use other testing companies, as well as professional geneticists post there, making the chance of connecting with a relative greater.

Most Clan Cameron DNA Project participants have posted their findings on Ysearch (a list of the Ysearch IDs and corresponding kit numbers is presented below).

FTDNA makes it easy to upload your DNA results to Ysearch..under Y-DNA Matches, right above the list of people in FTDNA who have results close to yours, there is a hotlink which automatically transfers your data to Ysearch and allows you to set up a user there.
